| Knowles Notches 600th Career Win | |  |
by ATP Tour9/18/2007 Capitals 2007 MVP Mark Knowles recorded his 600th career doubles win in tandem with long-time partner Daniel Nestor at the U.S. Open on August 31.
The former champions and No. 2 seeds overcame Yves Allegro and Kristof Vliegen 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-1 for a place in the third round. The duo won the 2004 title (d. Paes-Rikl) and finished runner-up in 1998 (l. to Stolle-Suk). They are playing together in New York for the 10th time.
Bahamian Knowles, who turned professional in 1992, has a 600-286 career record, while Canadian Nestor is now
603-238 lifetime.
Only 12 other players have more career match wins in ATP history, led by Australian legend Todd Woodbridge (782). Jonas Bjorkman, still enjoying success on the ATP circuit aged 35, has 665 doubles victories to his name.
Knowles and Nestor are currently No. 2 in the Stanford ATP Doubles Race, having won two titles this year at Roland Garros (d. Lukas Dlouhy-Pavel Vizner) and Queen’s Club, London (d. Mike Bryan-Bob Bryan).
At this year's U.S. Open, Knowles and Nestor were defeated by Lukas Dlouhy and Pavel Vizner 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Knowles and his mixed doubles partner Zi Yan went one round better in the mixed doubles, falling 7-6(5), 6-4 in the semifinals to eventual champions Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka.
